About the Province: CARTAGO
Cartago is the third most populous province of the country and yet the second smallest in territorial size. The province is well known for its wealth in Colonial traditions and was the capital city of Costa Rica until 1823, when the capital was moved to San José. The province has a total 3,124 square kilometers predominantly with of humid tropical climate an temperatures of 20 to 23°C (68 to 74°F).
The mountainous terrain is formed by two mountain ranges: the Central Mountain Range which encompasses the Turrialba Volcano and the Irazú Volcano, the latter is Costa Rica’s highest volcano; and the Talamanca Mountain Range in which Mount Chirripó, the country’s highest peak, can be found at 3,819 meters above sea level.
